How To Stay Afloat When It’s Raining In Mumbai!

For the people of Mumbai heavy downpour and catastrophe that accompanies the rain are not new. Almost every year, during the monsoon months, Mumbaikars experience severe water logging in several pockets in the city resulting in traffic congestion. More than often the local train services get hit, too, due to flooding of the railway tracks.

This year, too, for last 3 days, intense rain has been lashing the financial capital of India. Flood-prone areas like Sion, Matunga, Lower Parel, Andheri, got submerged, traffic needed to be diverted at many places such as King’s circle, Milan Subway, Andheri Subway etc. As per India Meteorological Department and the private weather forecaster Skymet intense spells of rainfall is likely to continue in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar for a few more hours.

While sailing through these difficult monsoon months, Mumbaikars never shy away from enjoying the rain and the cool weather condition that prevails. Here are some useful tips and tricks to be safe while it’s raining hard and enjoy the blessing as it lasts:

Raincoats & umbrellas: Never forget your raincoats and umbrellas while going out of the home, even if it’s not raining. Like everything else, rain is also unpredictable in our city. Among all regular and popular brands, one new entrant has captured our attention through catchy and witty hoardings across the city. Zeel brings high quality reversible rain suits for men & women. For women, they also offer full-length hooded rainwear and rain jackets. They also have raincoats for kids.

Stay prepared: When it rains in Mumbai, roads get flooded. Being an island city comes with its own woes and hassles. Add to that, poor infrastructure and dug-up roads. If you are an office-goer, be prepared for a few days when it rains heavily and you are stuck in the office, invariably! It’s always wiser to stay back than to venture out when it’s raining heavily. On such days, often, there is power outrage and you are left in the dark. Keep a good power-bank handy and charged to battle out such occasions. Mi power bank 2i, Intex are two good brands you can consider. You can also consider keeping an emergency light such as Wipro Emerald Rechargeable, which would help you get through flooded roads and open manholes.

Transportation: Though Mumbai public transportation systems, especially BEST bus service runs efficiently throughout the rainy months, it’s still one of the biggest headaches of common Mumbaikars to reach their destinations, safely. Though not one hundred percent reliable during rainy days, app-based cab services such as Uber or Ola may come handy for you, if you are stuck somewhere and want a comfortable ride home. However, be prepared to pay a hefty sum for your ride as the surge prices are usually many times higher than the usual fare for these cab services.

Last but not the least, staying updated about the weather condition, rain forecast, traffic jams and other things is the key when the sky opens up. What better than an app which can help you with all these? Thanks to Mumbai Weather Live App, you can stay updated every 15 minutes. The app has been developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune.
